There are many reasons as to why you may need to rent out a storage unit. Fortunately, there are a few simple tips you can follow to maximize space in even the smallest of storage units.

Ask About Installing Shelving

Having shelving along even one of the walls of your storage unit can make all the difference. However, many storage units these days are blank slates and don't have any shelving built in. If shelving would be helpful for your storage needs, you may want to consider speaking with your storage facility manager to see if he or she will allow you to install temporarily shelving in your unit. If not, you can always utilize free-standing shelving to help you better organize boxes and other smaller items without having to stack them on top of each other.

Create an Aisle if Possible

If you anticipate needing to move items around or retrieve items from your storage unit regularly, then you'll need to be especially careful how you store and organize your items. Ideally, you should create an aisle down the center or the storage unit so that you can easily access items along the perimeter of the space itself. If you don't have enough space to create a designated aisle, you should at least keep the items you anticipate needing most towards the front of the space and other items towards the back.

Get Creative With Saving Space

There are so many ways to get creative with making the most of your storage unit space. For example, if you have furniture that you're storing, consider dis-assembling it partially to reduce the footprint it takes up. For example, removing legs from a table can be a great way to maximize storage space; just be sure to keep all hardware and extra parts carefully labeled. If you have dressers or other pieces of furniture with drawers, be sure to utilize this space by storing smaller items inside of them.
